Quick answer
  • Start with the attack that does your work, then choose talents that support its damage type, resource needs and uptime.
  • A boss that kills you and a boss you cannot finish are different problems. Spend points on the failure you can actually see.

Match the talent to the damage you actually deal

Open your inventory details before committing to an elemental route. A player in the level-20 discussion found a much larger Fire bonus than Cold or Lightning and recommended building around that equipment. That is a useful starting point, but it is not a rule that the largest percentage always wins: the skill using that bonus still needs to hit reliably and fit the rest of your setup.

Keep the comparison narrow. If you are changing an attack, a weapon and several talents at once, a better result will not tell you which change helped. Keep your farming location and difficulty steady while you try a smaller adjustment. This is a way to judge your own build, not a published damage formula.

Spend points on the problem in front of you

A practical order for talent decisions
What happens in combatWhat to investigateWhat to avoid
You die before your damage has time to workYour defensive talents, healing and whether you can maintain attacksCopying a damage-heavy setup whose owner has better defensive gear
Your strong attack rarely firesIts resource requirements and the talents supporting that attackAdding another damage bonus to an attack you cannot sustain
You survive but a boss barely loses healthWhether your talents support the attacks and damage types you equippedSplitting points among unrelated damage plans
Packs fall quickly but the boss stops youA boss-focused alternative to your clearing setupAssuming good pack clear proves good boss damage

The early Warrior thread makes the resource problem clear. One player used Moon Slash with mana support; another preferred Hook and Vulnerable while levelling because Moon Slash took more investment. The useful question is whether your own character can sustain that attack. Copying the damage talents without the resource support leaves out the reason the suggested setup might work.

The item can be the reason the talent works

Thorns is a good example of why a talent list needs its equipment context. Several early Warrior replies linked their results to Thornheart Cuirass, while another player still could not beat the level-25 boss with a Thorns setup. A talent recommendation that assumes a particular legendary is incomplete until you know whether you own it and whether the rest of the setup keeps you alive.

The same caution applies to a late-game point list. A screenshot or sequence ending at a high-level capstone is not automatically a useful answer for a character with far fewer points. Take the part that solves your present problem; do not spend scarce points trying to imitate a payoff you cannot reach yet.

Check the patch before following an old point list

Monk Chain Force illustrates how quickly an old explanation can become misleading. Patch 1.0.1 restored its extra direct damage on every third Basic Attack, after an earlier rework had changed the effect. Patch 1.0.2 also changed Lone Hunter and Arcane Exposure. A familiar talent name is not enough to prove that an older build describes its current effect.

Make your changes before entering a leaderboard-tracked fight. The 1.0.2 notes say abilities and talents cannot be changed during those combat maps. Use ordinary farming or the Training Grounds to compare a plan before committing it to a scored attempt.
