- A practical Poison route is Poison Shot with Steady Shot while developing your gear, then Venom Bolt once available. This is a player-reported progression path, updated here against the official patch changes.
- Keep enough sustain to repeat the stage. Venomfang and Lone Hunter add specific conditions; they are not reasons to copy an entire old loadout unchanged.
Start flexible, then commit your damage bonuses
For a Hunter still changing attacks, start by looking for bonuses that help the skills you are actually using. In the October levelling discussion, Silverrend prioritised Dexterity, Basic Attack, Strong Attack and All Damage on gear, with defensive stats alongside them. Their early pairing was Poison Shot and Steady Shot; Venom Bolt came later. This gives you a usable direction without making an endgame item a requirement for starting.
Move further into Poison when both your available attacks and your drops support it; unlocking Venom Bolt alone is not a reason to discard every broad bonus. Silverrend’s later example used Poison Shot, Venom Bolt, Shockwave and Flare, with Poison talents, knockback support and recovery. Assemble that route from the abilities you have. It is a player example, not a verified unlock schedule or a statement of the game’s total slot count.
Spend points to solve a real problem
| What is happening | What to examine | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Still swapping damage routes | Broad attack bonuses, Dexterity and your basic sustain | These were Silverrend’s flexible early priorities. |
| Poison attacks are now your main damage | Poison bonuses on gear and talents | The attacks and bonuses should serve the same plan. |
| Strong attacks stop for lack of Mana | Mana cost, regeneration and recovery choices | A damage increase does little during a long resource stall. |
| Enemies close the gap immediately | Distance, Shockwave and the conditions on range bonuses | Lone Hunter is conditional, even on a ranged class. |
Silverrend changed a Strong Attack talent after their Mana regeneration improved. That is the useful decision to copy: once the resource problem is solved, reconsider the point that was solving it. Taking the later choice before you have the same sustain can leave the Hunter waiting instead of attacking. A fixed talent order would hide that dependency.
Use the updated Poison and set effects
Patch 1.0.2 increased Venom Bolt to two Poisoned stacks and Poison Trap to three. It also increased the Poisoned stack cap and damage per stack. You do not have to use every Poison ability, but these changes make old claims that a particular application method is pointless worth reconsidering.
Venomfang’s six-piece bonus was changed separately: its Poison Shot-triggered projectile increased to 420% Poison damage and applies two Poisoned stacks. That is the set effect, not the damage of every ordinary Poison Shot. If you are still missing the six-piece bonus, judge the attacks you have rather than the finished set you intend to collect.
An Arcane item can add a different damage component. Violet Skybow has a chance to trigger Arcane daggers from attack hits; the tooltip does not convert all your Poison damage into Arcane. Its listed version also requires level 70, so it is not an early Poison-build shopping requirement.
Keep the distance condition honest
Lone Hunter’s 1.0.2 bonus requires no enemies within six units. A boss moving into that space can change the value of the talent even while your attacks continue. Frost Trap advice is also stale: 1.0.2 renamed it Arcane Trap, and hotfix 1.0.2a says it now applies Dizzy, which also reduces attack speed. The hotfix explicitly connects that change to Flare. Dizzy is not the Monk status Dazed.
Prove the farm before leaving it unattended
Borowsky’s spider-boss thread provides a useful example of aligning the build: they reported reliable clears after investing in Poison damage both on gear and in talents. Another player in the same discussion admitted that their “farm” only won some attempts. These are different results, and the difference matters more than a single successful boss kill.
Try the new setup across several runs on the same stage. If the Hunter still dies or repeatedly runs dry, keep a reliable earlier farm while replacing the weak piece. Our recommendation is to change the main damage route, recovery or distance plan one at a time; that makes the next improvement easier to identify.
