Quick answer
  • The concrete unlock items are Reins. Official item descriptions say that using a named Rein permanently unlocks that creature as a minion.
  • If using a Rein produces no visible change, check the Minions menu and select it for your cart. A complete boss-to-Rein drop table is not confirmed here.

A Rein unlocks the creature named on the item

Deskrawl advertises recruitable enemies, including bosses. The item you can identify and use is a Rein: the official Ancient Oak Treant, Flying Fish King and Lord of the Cinder descriptions each say it permanently unlocks that named minion.

In a September 28 discussion, players described minion unlocks as random drops. That gives you a useful lead—look for the item—but not a guaranteed boss reward. The exact drop source and difficulty for a particular Rein still need checking; matching names alone do not settle either question.

From a Rein in your inventory to a minion on your cart

Read the item before using it

Check that the named minion is the one you want. The Rein descriptions identify a permanent unlock, so make this an unlock decision rather than treating it as a temporary combat consumable.

Pause at a trade warning

For Lord of the Cinder, an October 6 player was warned that the Rein was tradable. A reply explained that the unused item could be sold on the Steam Market but the used one could not. Decide whether you want the unlock before consuming it.

Use the Rein, then check the Minions menu

An October 4 player heard the activation sound but saw no minion. Opening the bottom-right Minions menu and putting it on the cart solved their problem. Selecting the unlocked minion is a separate step to check.

Three confirmed Rein examples

Named unlocks shown on official item pages

Rein of the Ancient Oak TreantAncient Oak TreantRead the Health Increase passive and Healing Spirit ability.
Rein of the Flying Fish KingFlying Fish KingRead its mana-cost passive and Mana Monsoon ability.
Rein of the Lord of the CinderLord of the CinderRead its cooldown passive and Ashen Wrath ability.

Compare these effects with the problem your character has: survivability, mana pressure or cooldown support. The table identifies what to inspect on each item; it is not a ranking or a promise that the matching boss is its only source.

If you expected a Rein and cannot find it

Check whether you are looking for a dropped item or an already unlocked minion. Those are different places to look: using a Rein is followed by selecting its minion, while a missing ground drop is a pickup question.

For Legendary Reins, patch 1.0.0i explicitly changed pickup so they are always collected regardless of filter settings. This is newer than the October 1 thread about ignored minion drops; do not use that older complaint to conclude that a rarity filter currently blocks a Legendary Rein.

There is no confirmed drop-rate or pity-counter figure to plan around here. Until a specific Rein’s route is established, avoid committing to a fixed number of boss kills or assuming that several empty runs mean the item is unavailable.
