- A Warrior Thorns build needs both retaliation damage and enough survivability to stay in the fight. Community setups combine Health, Armor and Thorns talents, often around Thornheart Cuirass. The confirmed Black Mist version increases Thorns damage by 500% but removes 15% Max Health, so its offensive bonus has a real defensive cost.
The core is damage plus surviving contact
Jnc’s release-week Warrior setup combines Vitality and Armor with Vicious Thorns and further Thorns-related investment. Super describes a similar direction with Thorns and Thorn Boost. Both are player allocations, but they agree on the central tradeoff: retaliation damage still needs a character that survives the incoming attacks.
Start with the Thorns values and relevant effects you actually own. Do not assume a legendary chest completes the build by itself. In the same discussion, another player reports failing an early boss after trying Thorns.
What the verified equipment does
| Item | Effect | Build implication |
|---|---|---|
| Thornheart Cuirass | Thorns damage increased by 500%; lose 15% Max Health. | Compare the damage gain with the smaller Health buffer before treating it as an automatic upgrade. |
| Unstoppable Gauntlets | Each Ability hit grants 1% Armor for five seconds, up to 100 stacks. | The trigger is an Ability hit. The text alone does not prove Thorns retaliation builds these stacks. |
The Thornheart wording does not establish how every other damage modifier combines with it. Likewise, Armor from the gloves is not automatically Thorns damage unless a separate effect says it converts or contributes Armor. Read those links individually rather than assuming every defensive stat is also offensive.
Keep utility choices tied to a job
Jnc used Valiant Strike, Flame Strike, Rage Shield and Deadly Hook in an early Thorns setup. A later community reply describes Thorns with Hook and Whirlwind. These are different supporting bars, not evidence that all those abilities must be equipped together.
Choose utility to solve the obstacle: ranged enemies, recovery, or gaps in the damage loop. Adding a Mana-hungry supporting attack can introduce a new sustain requirement even if retaliation is doing much of the damage.
When the build stops working
| What you observe | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| High retaliation numbers but frequent sudden deaths | Health after item penalties, defenses against the incoming damage, and recovery between hits. |
| Good packs but a failed boss | Whether the setup survives that boss’s hits and can maintain its support without easy kills. |
| A new item promises a conversion or proc | The exact trigger and eligible damage type; do not assume Thorns counts as an Ability hit. |
| A guide shows very different damage | Its gear, talent choices and version, rather than the character level alone. |
These sources do not establish a target-farming location for Thornheart Cuirass. In the discussion, Eorze could recall roughly when the chest appeared and finding more from later bosses, but not the exact location. That recollection does not supply a drop-rate estimate or a reliable farming route.
