- Players repeatedly report that dying removes an active XP potion buff before its advertised duration ends. Plan your potion session around a fight you can survive.
- This concerns the effect of a potion already used. It does not establish that death deletes unused potions from your bag or causes a healing-charge penalty.
Does death remove an XP potion buff?
Treat death as a risk to an active XP potion. In an October 3 Steam discussion, Dragonrb reported losing the effect after dying, then deliberately repeated the situation and saw it disappear again. Another thread describes early expiration on maps where the player sometimes died. These are player reports, not a verified rule covering every potion and mode.
That distinction matters when you are deciding whether to drink another one. If you are repeatedly dying at the same boss, replacing the buff without changing the fight can spend more potions without solving the problem. Save the next one for a steadier farming run.
First identify what actually disappeared
| What you notice | What to check | What can be concluded |
|---|---|---|
| The XP buff vanishes after a death | Compare the active effect immediately before and after revival | This matches the repeated community reports. |
| Unused bottles appear to be missing | Compare your inventory count separately from the active buff | The death reports do not establish loss of unused inventory. |
| A healing-potion counter changes | Check that counter separately from an XP or combat buff | An XP-buff report does not establish a healing-charge penalty. |
Spend the potion on a fight you can repeat
Run the stage without spending the buff
Watch a complete run, including its boss. A stage that is safe only while you intervene is a poor unattended farming choice.
Step back if the run is unstable
Choose an earlier stage when the current one produces repeated deaths. Aim for repeatable clears before trying to maximize the reward from each enemy.
Use the buff and check the next run
Confirm that the effect is active, then check again after a death or a return to town. This separates a lost buff from a missing inventory item.
Fix the failure before replacing it
If the same encounter kills you again, change the stage or survivability plan before spending another potion.
One October 3 player described using XP and attack-speed potions while automatically repeating a stage before their progression wall, sometimes moving back several stages when unattended deaths continued. That is a useful farming pattern, not a fixed recommendation to farm a particular number of levels below your character.
What about returning to town or finishing a run?
Early reports disagree. In the September 29 duration thread, one player blamed finishing a run and another blamed returning to town, while other replies suspected death. Do not assume all three are confirmed current rules. If a buff disappears while your character survives, record the transition that happened and the potion name before trying to explain it.
The practical question is whether the effect survives an interruption, not just how much time remains on it. Use a stable farming session and check the active buff after a death or transition before spending a replacement.
