- There is no confirmed universal rarity multiplier for higher difficulties. Check the specific bonuses and reward changes below before deciding whether a harder run is worth the extra time.
- Compare useful drops per hour and entry costs. A harder route that you clear slowly can be a worse farm even when its rewards are attractive.
Does higher difficulty improve every drop rate?
There is no official all-difficulty rarity table in the available patch notes. An October 2 discussion claims difficulty is absent from ordinary gear-rarity calculations, but the post’s claimed game-data analysis was not independently verified. It also predates the October 8 loot changes. Neither that post nor one unlucky day on Inferno settles every current loot rule.
| Rule | Scope | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0.2: doubled super-rare drop chance for offline characters in Singleplayer mode | Named examples include Divine and Black Mist equipment, Legendary and Rune Set runes, and valuable commodities | A bonus for closing the game or a blanket online-mode multiplier. |
| 1.0.2: more Mythic Rift loot at all tiers | Rift reward change | A published ordinary-map rarity formula. |
| 1.0.1: Gold Bars from zone bosses on Inferno | A named item source at a named difficulty | Proof that every item becomes more common. |
Choose a route by results, not its label
Separate three questions: can this activity supply the item, how often can you complete it, and what resources does an attempt cost? A route that unlocks a desired reward can be worth doing even if it is not the fastest place to gain experience.
Use the same target
Compare the same type of useful drop. Counting all white gear in one session and only upgrades in another tells you little.
Hold the setup steady
Keep your build, item-find bonuses and consumables unchanged. Record character mode, difficulty and map.
Include failed runs and entry costs
Time spent dying or collecting entry materials belongs in the farming comparison. Do not divide rewards only by successful boss-fight time.
What a dry streak does not prove
An Inferno player reported no Black Mist item after a day, and replies disagreed about the loot pool and odds. A single player’s estimate cannot tell you how many runs your drop will take. A dry streak can be frustrating without proving the chosen difficulty has a broken loot table.
Use the explicit reward rules to choose eligible content, then compare the routes your own character can finish reliably. If your target is a specific rarity rather than a named difficulty reward, avoid sacrificing most of your clear speed for an assumed hidden multiplier.
