Quick answer
  • First identify the failed part of the fight: low damage, no mana, a large lethal hit or damage that overwhelms recovery. Each needs a different change.
  • The official Training Grounds meter shows overall damage and current DPS. Use it for a consistent damage comparison, then check survival and uptime in the actual boss attempt.

Use the Training Grounds for a controlled comparison

Version 1.0.1 added a Training Grounds meter showing Damage Overall and Current DPS against the Training Dummy. This gives you a more useful baseline than comparing two isolated critical-hit numbers.

Keep the setup fixed

Use the same skills, companion, consumables and length of test.

Change one component

Compare the weapon, talent choice or other specific change you are considering.

Watch the full pattern

A high opening burst can conceal long periods of mana starvation or downtime.

Return to the boss

A stationary target cannot reproduce the boss’s pressure, movement, resistances or timing.

The community Damage formula thread explicitly calls its proposed order of operations theoretical guesswork. There is no verified universal equation to plug every displayed stat into here. Prefer a repeatable comparison over a formula assembled from uncertain multipliers.

Use incoming damage to choose a defense

A late-game Hunter discussion recommends checking the combat log for the damage type of the hit that kills you. Use that information to choose the protection you need, rather than adding Armor every time a boss wins. If the fatal hit is a critical strike, compare your critical protection and Health buffer as well.

If an effect activates only after falling below a Health threshold, do not assume it will save a character that dies to the triggering hit. Build enough safety into the attempt to observe whether the protection actually activates.

Redrock Lord shows why boss pressure matters

In the Redrock Lord thread, a player reports Swelling Fury building up during the fight and increasingly dangerous hits. Replies suggest focusing a mixed Thorns/Whirlwind setup and improving survival. The original poster reports doing better after leaning into Whirlwind. That supports diagnosing both damage and time under pressure, not a universal minimum-Health requirement.

Use a safer previous boss to obtain upgrades if the current one is unstable. A progression kill you scrape through once and a farming loop you can leave unattended are different targets.

Make the final adjustment before combat

Version 1.0.2 prevents ability and talent changes during leaderboard-tracked combat maps. It also makes a newly equipped ability in ordinary combat start on its full effective cooldown. Prepare a boss-specific setup before starting a tracked attempt; older advice about instant mid-fight swaps may no longer apply.
