Quick answer
  • Players report inserting a gem by dragging it onto equipment with an open socket.
  • Choose a gem’s bonus to match the skill or defensive need you are building around.
  • Removal is reported to destroy gems; do not assume socketing is freely reversible. Version 1.0.2 raises gem stacks to 99.

How to put a gem into equipment

Start with the item, not the gem: make sure there is an empty socket available. In the September 30 gem thread, players explain the action as holding, dragging and dropping the gem onto that item. The original poster later confirmed the method worked.

  1. Inspect the equipment for an open socket.
  2. Read the gem’s bonus and decide whether it helps this item’s role.
  3. Drag the gem from your inventory onto the equipment with the open socket.
  4. Reopen the item tooltip and check the result before repeating the process with other gems.

If the drop action does nothing, check that you are targeting an available socket. Confirm the item’s requirements and socket options before spending gold to prepare it; an exact unlock threshold is not confirmed here.

Choose the bonus for the build

A useful gem choice starts with the problem
Build needWhat to look forWhat to avoid
Your main skill deals elemental damageA gem whose displayed damage type matches that skillChoosing a different element just because the gem is rarer
You need survivalA defensive bonus that addresses the damage ending your runsAdding more offence while the character keeps dying
You will replace the item soonA small investment you can afford to leave behindAssuming every gem can be recovered intact

For example, the Sacred Judgment Monk author uses Lightning Damage gems in the weapon because that is the main attack’s element. It is a specific build choice, not a recommendation to put Lightning gems into every weapon.

Check the cost of changing your mind

October players report that de-socketing destroys gems. The thread does not give a complete menu walkthrough or all possible recovery rules, so read the current removal warning carefully instead of treating insertion as a reversible trial.

Trading is a separate concern. A community reply to a Divine-weapon owner says modified items can no longer be sold. Before socketing an item you may sell, check its trade status and the action’s warning. The reply is not a verified description of every possible binding case.

Early socket-cost complaints quote prices and gem-upgrade quantities, but those posts do not establish a universal current price list. Use the cost displayed for the actual item and recipe you have selected.

Gem stacks increased to 99

Version 1.0.2 increased the maximum gem stack from 50 to 99. Older October complaints about stacks of 50 predate that change and should not be used as the current limit.
